Case bound books

Also called hardcover, this method of binding is a popular option. The case-bound books are hand-sewn in sections which allows the pages to lay flat when open. There are three different variants for this method of binding.

Case binding - soft spine

Suitable for 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 or 32 pages.

Beyond 32 pages the total amount must be a multiple of 12 or 16 ​

Average turnaround time: 3 weeks for printing + binding

Artwork requirement: print-ready PDF, min. of 10mm margins on the pages, 3mm bleed + crop marks for full page images, high resolution images

When there aren't many pages in a book or for aesthetic preferences, we can create a hard cover with a 'soft spine'. The cover wraps around the thin sections in a rounded shape with a soft, flexible spine.

Case binding - flat spine

Min. pages: 48 (total amount must be a multiple of 12 or 16 ​)

For the case-bound books to be sewn in sections, each sheet of paper is folded in half to become a folio. The folios are then gathered in sections (also called signatures) for sewing. Each section typically contains 12 or 16 pages. Here the spine of the text block is kept square, with a flat spine piece. This method will require a minimum of 48 pages in order to have a little bit of bulk on the spine. 

Case binding - rounded

Min. pages: 72 (total amount must be a multiple of 12 or 16 ​)

Average turnaround time : 3 weeks for printing + binding

In this instance the text block is rounded after sewing. Both text-block and cover have a rounded spine shape.
